Geology and Mineral Resources Facilities and Equipment

Geoarchaeology and Paleoenvironment Research Lab

The Geoarchaeology and Paleoenvironment Research lab is used for phytolith analysis, particle-size analysis (pipette method), and determinations of soil organic matter and content.

Bridget Sanderson pipettes a portion of the soil sample to centrifuge and measure the fine clay fraction for particle-size analysis.

Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Lab

The Sedimentology and Stratigraphy labs in Moore Hall of the KGS are used to conduct stable carbon isotope and soil micromorphology sample preparation.

Digital Cathodoluminescence Imaging Laboratory

The Kansas Geological Survey Digital Cathodoluminescence Imaging Laboratory is built around a Relion Industries Reliotron III cold cathode cathodoluminescence chamber. This system is optimized for the design of microsampling campaigns for stable isotopes of carbonate minerals in support of diagenetic studies and paleohydrologic investigations.

Lynn Watney Core Laboratory

The Lynn Watney Laboratory is operated as a service to the people and industry of Kansas providing routine and special core analysis to determine rock quality. It is named after Dr. Lynn Watney, a beloved scientist who worked for the KGS until 2017.
