KGS GRA elected secretary of American Geophysical Union education section

LAWRENCE — Graduate research assistant Sunday Siomades has been elected secretary of the American Geophysical Union's education section. Her term began January 1.

The AGU’s education section was created in 2018 to serve as home for educators throughout the earth and space sciences. The education section membership spans from pre-collegiate to graduate-level educators and education researchers.

Siomades became involved with AGU when she was given the opportunity to write the education section’s newsletter in 2021. From there she expanded her role and began developing the education section's online presence and content using multiple forms of media, including writing and video.

“Over the years, I've had the pleasure to collaborate with a diverse, thoughtful group of educators, scientists and professionals united by the collective desire to improve the scientific community's connectivity with the public,” Siomades said.

As secretary Siomades will manage the section’s communications team and all actions that team will complete, such as future newsletters and social media content.

“I look forward to continuing to pursue projects that connect society to science in an accessible way,” Siomades said.

Siomades began her time at the KGS in 2022 as a science communication intern and then became a graduate research assistant in the fall of 2024. At the survey, Siomades has completed many written and graphic design projects, with her main focus on communicating science to the public.

As a member of the outreach team, Siomades crafts a variety of outreach materials, including press releases and other online articles. She is developing an educational board game through the KGS for her master’s thesis.
