AWQUA Publications

The KGS has conducted decades of important research on groundwater quality at local to regional scales across the state of Kansas. Data collected as part of the AWQUA program will enable new statewide analysis of trends in groundwater quality and advance integration of water quality in existing groundwater models. A full inventory of research in the Geohydrology and Geohealth section can be found here

Upper Arkansas River Mineralization Study: In response to findings of uranium exceeding the maximum contaminant level (MCL) in public water supply systems, state agencies requested a study of the current state of groundwaters in the High Plains aquifer in the upper Arkansas River corridor, with a focus on uranium, radioactivity, and other elements for which MCLs exist. With funding support from the Kansas Water Plan in 2019, the KGS completed a two-year study in 2023. More information can be found in the Assessment of Groundwater Mineralization in the Upper Arkansas River Corridor 2023 Final Project Report (pdf)
