STOMP Short Course

The Kansas Geological Survey, in partnership with Dr. Mark White, Senior Researcher at the KGS, and Signe White, CCS Program Manager and Principal Hydrogeologist at INTERA, are excited to offer a 4-day short course (March 17-20th) on the STOMP (Subsurface Transport Over Multiple Phases) and STOMPX subsurface simulating programs as part of a new series of KGS short courses for professionals seeking to continue their education. Offered in person on the KU campus, this course is divided into four sessions and is designed for users familiar with subsurface modeling, but new to STOMP and STOMPX--or perhaps new to modeling of nonisothermal and multifluid subsurface systems.

Current Schedule (subject to change):

  • Day One: Saturated and Unsaturated Flow and Transport (March 17, 2025)

The first day will be focused on one- and two-dimensional saturated and unsaturated flow problems and provide the students with an overview of modeling and the numerical simulation process, hands-on experience in executing STOMP, modifying input files, and converting and visualizing outputs.

  • Day Two: Nonisothermal Flow and Transport (March 18, 2025)

The second day will be focused on non-isothermal systems and aqueous geochemistry. As with the first day, students will be modifying input files and converting and visualizing outputs.

  • Day Three: Carbon Sequestration (March 19, 2025)

The third day will be focused on problems involving carbon sequestration in deep saline reservoirs, with an emphasis on the coupled-well model, heterogeneous domains, and grid options. Students will advance their hands-on experience in executing STOMP, transitioning from shallow vadose zone to deep reservoir problems. As with the first day, students will be modifying input files and converting and visualizing outputs.

  • Day Four: Special Sessions and Open Office (March 20, 2025)

The fourth day will open with two special sessions. One focused on the application of STOMP to field-scale problems as part of the process of applying for an EPA UIC Class VI well permit and a second focused on geologic hydrogen within Kansas. During the afternoon of the fourth day, the course instructors will be available to assist students with questions on the application of the STOMP or STOMPX simulators to other short course problems, ongoing projects, or other subsurface modeling problems of interest.
